1 Corinthians 13 Song

The chapter moves in three parts. Verses 1-3 say that without love, every gift is noise — "sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal" in the old wording. Verses 4-7 are the list: fifteen short clauses about what love does and refuses to do. Verses 8-13 widen out — love never fails, we see "through a glass, darkly" now but will see face to face — and land on faith, hope and love. Older translations say "charity" throughout; newer ones say "love." Both sing.

Songwriters notice the list first. Fifteen clauses on one subject, each a few words long, is the kind of repetition choruses are built from, and "love never fails" is a hook that needs no help. The three-part shape also maps neatly onto a song: verse, chorus, bridge. That is why the passage has been set to music so many times, and why a new setting still sounds fresh — the text does most of the work.

Weddings first: as a first dance, a processional, background for the signing of the register, or the track under the ceremony video. Couples renewing vows and celebrating tenth, twenty-fifth and fiftieth anniversaries make their own versions too, often with the original wedding date sung into a dedication line.
